BMW’s new design direction has not been without its critics. The massive grilles have been the subject of much controversy – but is that all?

That’s the question that Frank Stephenson, the designer of the original X5, among others, has set out to answer in his latest video. The focus of Stephenson’s critique, this time, is the iX.

BMW call the iX “the symbol for a new era of mobility.” The EV is as long and wide as an X5, as tall as an X6, and has the wheelbase of an X7. According to Stephenson, that will likely give it great interior space.

It could also deliver nice proportions, but Stephenson’s focus is drawn elsewhere. Firstly, the grille, which he still thinks is too big. Then there’s the lack of tension throughout the rest of the car. Although BMW intended this to be a minimalist design, Stephenson argues that it’s too simple.

“It’s not moving,” he explains. “For me, that’s not the right way to design a moving object. I would prefer the vehicle to look like it’s ready to move.”

He blames the absence of design lines for that. Although he understands the BMW’s affinity for simplicity, like with the grille he says they’ve gone too far.

“The absence of lines can almost turn a vehicle into something that is just static,” says Stephenson. “This car, I think, looks very static from the sideview.”

All of this might come down to BMW’s desire to introduce a new design language. Ultimately, though, it looks like a vehicle that was penned by a product designer, not an automotive designer.

“It’s almost a vehicle that’s lost its soul,” says Stephenson. “What I mean is not to criticize the product designer. But products look like products and cars look like cars. It’s not the same profession.”

If you took away the grille, Stephenson asks, would you be able to tell that this is a BMW? Now that’s a good question…


看完了台灣 2020 新車 Top10,以及美國 2020 新車 Top10 之後,與台灣相鄰的重要汽車市場日本,2020 新車銷售 Top20 也已揭曉,跟 2019 年相比,前三名全都換人了!從品牌來看,Toyota 仍是最強大的存在。

先前的銷售冠軍的 Toyota Prius,在 2020 年總排行已經正式掉出 10 名之外,不過新一代的 Yaris 接下它的棒子,以超過 15 萬輛的成績,成為 2020 的第 1 名。

新一代 Yaris,在日本上市之後的成績幾乎呈現獨走狀態。

Raise 也同樣表現出色,與 Yaris 一起搶下好名次。

第 2 名也是新世代上市車款的 Toyota Raise,搶下超過 12 萬輛,連同第 3 名的 Corolla,Toyota 把前 3 名的名額都搶走。事實上,在這前 10 名當中,Toyota 佔據 7 個名次,舊世代車款退出,但新世代車款都能順利銜接上來。

值得一提的 Toyota 車款,莫過於第 5 名的 Alphard,在滿滿的小車裡,只有 Alphard 是中大型 MPV,衝出了 9 萬輛的成績,躍居第 5 名。

Honda Fit 以新世代改款車型亮相後,成績不俗。

非 Toyota 車款中,Honda Fit 表現最為出色,拿下第 4 名,銷量差一點就突破 10 萬輛,而 Honda 另一款中小型 MPV 車款 Freed,在 2019 年推出小改款後,在 2020 年超越對手 Sienta,搶下第 7 名。

而 Nissan 則以 Note 這款 e-Power 動力車款,拿下第 9 名。

Automotive Youtuber TheStradMan, known for his positively purple collection of vehicles, has helped his friend take delivery of a brand new Bugatti Divo. However, this one is far from ordinary, if you could ever call a Divo that.

The hypercar cost around $5.4 million, and its owner also has the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo, a Chiron, and a Veyron Vitesse in his collection. It was air-freighted directly from Bugatti’s factory in Molsheim, France, all the way to Los Angeles, California, and to add to the pageantry of uncrating the car, Bugatti even included a big carbon fiber box containing… the key.

The Divo is powered by an 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine making 1,479 hp (1500 PS / 1,103 kW) and 1180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque. 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) is dealt with in just 2.4 seconds and its top speed is 236 mph (380 km/h).

In fact, it’s slightly slower than the Chiron it’s based on due to it being more track-focused. As such, all the additional aero it has creates more downforce, keeping the car stuck to the tarmac, but resulting in a lower top speed. Even so, thanks to its improved aerodynamics, the Divo is able to go around Nardo a whole 8 seconds faster than the Chiron – not that we don’t expect many owners to be hitting up any track days with their $5.4 million hypercar.

This Divo is one of only 40 being produced for the entire world, and one of only a handful in the United States. Finished in a deep red with black and red accents throughout, it gets its “Ladybug” moniker from the spotted pattern occupying the areas behind Bugatti’ signature C-shaped body line.
